Welcome to 2018! We at Boardable hope the year is off to a great start for you and your organization.
Personally, I am very excited for this year. On January 1, I was able to dedicate myself full time to Boardable. I wrapped up a 12-year run leading the creative agency SmallBox, and was honored to hand off the business to my wife, Jenny Banner, who is the new CEO. It was an ideal situation, to find that I was married to my successor!
Although I felt like I had been full time at Boardable for much of 2017, it feels good to know that I now can give my all to this company as we grow. We have so many great things planned for the product and our customers.
Before we dig into that, the new year prompts reflection on the year just past. 2017 was as an eventful year, both for myself and Boardable, and I’d like to share with you what brought us here.
Boardable sprang from solving a problem
As you may or may not know, a SmallBox client originally inspired Boardable. A large local nonprofit needed a board portal, and after careful analysis, it became clear that our client would be best served by a product, and not a custom tool.
There are three chief problems with custom board portals (and custom products in general):
- They are expensive to build.
- The are expensive to update.
- They lack teams dedicated to working everyday on product improvement.
Those issues often lead to nonprofits feeling “locked in” to custom board portals that don’t really do what they need. We didn’t want that to happen to our client.
Surveying the landscape of board management software
So we looked around and saw what was out there. Were there good board management tools that they could possibly purchase? Certainly, but after our review, they all came up short. Either they were built to solve a different problem, or they weren’t easy to use—or they were really, really expensive.
We knew there had to be a better way, and after careful consideration, we decided that we were the best ones to build the board portal our client needed.
By the end of 2016, we had a product and customers. Things have moved quickly since then. We now have customers not just around the country, but around the world. We have grown from four co-founders working on Boardable part time to six of us working full time. It’s exciting to see so many great organizations using Boardable, including that original client who now has over 400 users on their account.
Customer feedback drives product enhancements
We have big plans for 2018. We plan to expand the product features of our board management software, including:
- A task manager
- Admin dashboard
- Board fundraising tools
- Board talent marketplace
And that’s just what we’re planning going into 2018. To make sure Boardable truly serves our customers, we always start with feedback. Even if you and your organization aren't currently Boardable customers, we value your input.
